The River Thames barrier
This barrier was built in 1966 to protect London from being flooded, which it has faced since Roman times. It is located in Silvertown, to the east of London.

Since it started being used in 1986, it has been closed 227 times to protect London from flooding. It is closed at least once a year to make sure that it works.
