You may think all writing is the same, right? Well, today we’re going to show you the two main types of writing: formal and informal writing. But what’s the difference between the two?

What’s the difference between formal and informal writing?

Good question. Formal writing is the style you use when you’re writing to someone important, such as your teacher or boss.

When you’re using formal writing, you use correct punctuation (such as full stops and commas) and don’t use any slang. You don’t usually use abbreviations.

Informal writing is the style you use when you’re talking to your family and friends. You can use slang and you don’t have to worry about always using correct punctuation.

Examples of formal writing

Example 1: An email

Dear Jane,

I hope you are well.

I just wanted to ask you if you saw the document I sent you?

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

John Smith

Example 2: Notice of a meeting

Just to let you know, we have a meeting at 9.30am on Thursday.
