Setting up a bank account may seem hard and complicated, but it’s easier than you think.

What bank account can I get?

There are a range of banks that offer current accounts (a bank account that stores you money and is linked to a debit card). A list of UK banks that do current accounts are listed at the bottom of this page.

Banks usually give you benefits when you create a current account with them. These can be anything from giving you money to discounts on rail cards.

Banks also offer different types of current accounts. Some offer extra services, such as insurance, in return for a higher monthly fee. Other accounts just offer somewhere to store money without any monthly fees.

What do I need to set up a bank account?

What you need to set up a bank account depends on your age and the bank you’re setting up an account with. Usually, you will need a passport or driving licence and a letter (such as a bill) to prove your name and address. The documents you need are different if you are a university student or under 18 years old.
