Rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and even 1000 is a skill you’re going to need. So, let’s show you how to round up (and down) some numbers!

Example questions

As a visual aid, each of these questions will have a number line below it showing where (approximately) the number is.

Round 6 to the nearest 10.

So, the first thing we need to look for here is if the number is above 5. This is something that we’ll need to look for in every rounding question. This is clearly above 5, so the nearest 10 is, well, 10.

Round 57 to the nearest 100.

Again, we need to see if the number we need to round is above 50. It is. So the answer to this question is 100.

Round 1320 to the nearest 2000.

This number is below 1500, so we have to round down instead of round up. The answer to this question is 1000.
