Punctuation
Question marks
Question marks look like this:
?
They are used to show when someone is asking a question. For example:
What are you having for lunch?
The question mark always goes at the end of the sentence.
Full stops
Full stops show that a sentence has ended. Full stops look like this:
.
For example: Jake had finished his drawing.
Full stops aren’t used in sentences where there is a question mark or exclamation mark at the end.
Exclamation marks
An exclamation mark is used when the sentence says something that is important. Exclamation marks look like this:
!
For example: We are going to have a race!
Tenses
Past tense
The past tense is used to talk about what happened in the past. Here are a few examples:
Jane was playing football.
Bob ate his lunch.
Present tense
The present tense is used to talk about what is happening now. Here are a few examples:
Jane is playing football.
Bob is eating his lunch.
Future tense
The future tense is used to talk about what will happen in the future. Here are a few examples:
Jane will play football.
Bob will eat his lunch.
Capital letters
Capital letters are used:
- at the beginning of every sentence
- when saying a name or place
For example:
There was a rabbit in the bush.
At the end of the day, he was going to Bob’s house in Lichfield.
